Physical Education

Welcome to the St. Ignatius Physical Education web page.  K-8th grade students at St. Ignatius attend Physical Education every day.  The program is developmental in nature beginning with loco-motor skills, large muscle activities, eye/hand coordination, eye/foot coordination, games of low-organization, simple tumbling, and dance skills for the youngest students.  Intermediate grades use the skills learned in the primary grades and develop them in sport lead-up games.  By the time students enter 6th grade, they are participating in a variety of team and individual sports which include:  basketball, volleyball, flag football/rugby, ultimate frisbee, tennis, ping-pong, archery, Tabata/circuit training, Takraw, softball, bowling, and recreational games.  Students are provided a well-rounded and challenging program daily.

Special opportunities include the annual PE Extravaganza which is held in November for grades 1-3 and Little Field Day in the Spring for students in grades K-8 to actively participate.

Students in grades 4-8 are required to dress out every day in PE.  The required uniform may be purchased at Rick’s Sporting Goods.  It includes a green jersey (with last name printed on the back-Rick’s does this printing for you), green shorts, and tennis shoes.

To be excused from PE, students should bring a note from home or the parent can email the teacher.  In the case of an extended illness or injury, students are required to provide a doctor’s excuse.

Students in grade 1-5 receive an “S” (satisfactory) or an “N” (needs improvement).  Students in grades 4-5 are graded on dressing out, participation, displaying good sportsmanship, and cooperation with classmates.

Students in grades 6-8 are graded in four categories which include:  dressing out, skill/form, sportsmanship/teamwork, and effort.  Students receive a daily grade in each category.  The use of a clearly defined, 4-point rubric is provided to all students and parents at the beginning of every quarter.
